Heffley faces Yaich for McCall’s seat

In November, it’s going to be Democrat Justin V. Yaich versus Republican Doyle Heffley for the seat being vacated by Pa. State Rep. Keith McCall in the 122nd District.

For the past 35 years a McCall has occupied the House seat. First, the late Thomas J. McCall served from 1975 until he died suddenly in December 1981. Then his son, Keith, won election after election to retain the seat from 1982 to the present.

Jim Thorpe considers skateboard limits

Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko presented the borough council with a model ordinance for skateboarding in the town during its normal monthly meeting on Thursday evening. The council had requested that the mayor look into such an ordinance at a previous meeting.

The material Sofranko presented to council was prepared by the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs and consists of a sample ordinance and some other information about regulating skateboarding activity within an urban area.

Local businesses unhappy with meters

Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko reported to the borough council on his meeting with the Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce at their normal monthly meeting on Thursday evening, May 13, 2010. The major mayor met with the chamber to discuss the parking meters in the borough. Earlier this year, the borough reprogrammed the meters, doubling the cost to park in town and making the minimum investment 50 cents to get 30 minutes of parking time. One hour costs a dollar and two hours costs two dollars, which is the maximum amount of time available on the meters.

JT police launch community watch program

Jim Thorpe officials are hoping that a new community program will help police catch criminals and keep the crime rate to a minimum.

Over the next few days, beginning this evening, residents in the borough can expect to find their neighbors, as well as police officers, delivering brochures explaining about the new Jim Thorpe Community Watch program. The program, which has been in the works for the last month, is designed to have residents serve as the eyes and ears of the police department.

Jim Thorpe leaders included in CCTI board

Members of the Carbon Career and Technical Institute’s Joint Operating Committee voted during their normal monthly meeting on Thursday to approve 16 members of the school’s Local Advisory (Participatory Planning) Committee for the 2010-2011 school year.

The members are Franklin Andreas, Philip Binder, Ron Blisard, John Drury, Dawn Ferrante, Ron Fritz, Michael Heer, Alan Katz, Diane Luicana, Candy Madera, Todd Mason, Jaime Mendes, Jeannie Miller, Bill Richards, Joseph Sebelin and Garry Wentz.

Also at the meeting, the council, on the recommendation of the Administrative Director, granted the administration permission to notify CCTI employees, including substitutes, who do not work thorugh or do not receive pay for the summer months, that there is a “reasonable assurance” that their positions would be available to them again when school re-opens in August 2010.

Earth Day festival this weekend in Jim Thorpe

The 13th annual Jim Thorpe Earth Day Festival will have people celebrating the environment with crafts, cleaning and fun.

“I started this 13 years ago because a lot of the schools weren’t teaching the kids about recycling,” said organizer Shelli Holland. “The amount of people becoming more interested in this has definitely grown, even in the last five years.”

Candidates forum at Penn’s Peak Tuesday

Two candidates for governor, two for Congress and one for lieutenant governor will participate in a town hall forum on Tuesday at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. and is being hosted by the Lehighton 9/12 project. It will be televised live on Blue Ridge Communications TV 13.

A donation will be taken at the door.

Attending will be gubernatorial candidates Tom Corbett and Sam Rohrer, both Republicans; lieutenant governor candidate Stephen Urban, a Republican; and 11th Congressional District candidates Corey O’Brien, a Democrat, and Lou Barletta, a Republican.

Coordinators MaryEllen Salerno and Sandy Dellecker said reservations are encouraged, and can be made by e-mail at wakeup@ptd.net.

People attending the forum are asked to arrive in time to be seated by 6:45 p.m.

Developers pitch aerial tram

Local developers are pitching the development of an aerial tram that would connect visitors by air from Flagstaff Mountain to downtown Jim Thorpe.

Let’s hope those afraid of change don’t kill this project which could bring thousands more visitors to Jim Thorpe every year and boost the local economy with jobs and revenue. Maybe the former Packerton Yards could be used as a parking lot for these visitors?
