Budget passes with no tax increase

There will be no increase in borough taxes for the residents of Jim Thorpe next year.

The Jim Thorpe Borough Council approved the borough’s 2009 budget with no increase in property taxes during their monthly meeting on Thursday evening.

“The first thing I’d like to announce is that there will be no increase in taxes for 2009,” said council President John McGuire.

88 graduate from D.A.R.E at LB Morris

Kendall Juracka, a fifth-grader at L.B. Morris Elementary School in Jim Thorpe, shakes the had of her principal, Barbara Conway during the school's annual DARE graduation last week. Eighty eight fifth-graders graduated from the program, which was conducted by Jim Thorpe Police Detective Joseph Schatz and Carbon County Sheriff's Deputy David Midas. Students Sarah Liptka, Amy Jaskot and Cara Highfield were chosen as the winners of the DARE essay contest and Sabrina Cole and Kevin Rock each won a bike donated by Jim Thorpe Borough Council members Jeremy Melber and Justin Yaich, as well as Funeral Director David Stianche.

Jim Thorpe gets $75,000 grant to construct new bandshell

The Borough of Jim Thorpe has received a $75,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to construct a new bandshell and restrooms at the park.

“We plan on putting up a new bandshell or some sort of structure to perform the same function as the bandshell that we tore down,” said Jim Thorpe Council member Justin Yaich, who chairs the borough’s buildings committee.

Lighting installed at Mauch Chunk memorial

The Committee for the Restoration of the Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk World War II Soldiers´ Memorials has completed yet another phase of its goals; the installation of lighting at the East Mauch Chunk World War II Memorial on North Street in Jim Thorpe at the Fairview Hose Company. The lighting and the associated electrical work was paid for by the Jim Thorpe Lions Club. To date, $2,800 has been spent on behalf of the committee, which plans to complete the final phase of work, the placement of bronze medallions at the Mauch Chunk WWII Honor Roll at Hazard Square, by the end of the month. Pictured at the memorial on Monday afternoon are: Jeremy Melber, Lion, Jim Thorpe Borough Councilman and committee member; Ronald Sheehan, Lion and committee co-chair; James Trainer, Lions past president; Wilfred Gardiner, Lions president; Edith Lukasevich, committee co-chair, and Carole Walbert, committee member.

Keith McCall (D-122nd), behind check, presents the Borough of Jim Thorpe with a $500,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Wednesday afternoon, at the site of a proposed building that will house the borough\'s administrative offices and police department at Memorial Park, near the intersection of E. 10th and Fern streets. The 4,200-square-foot building, which will be in the shape of a T, will also feature a conference room for borough meetings. Councilman Justin Yaich, who chairs the borough\'s buildings and parks committee, said if things proceed on schedule, the borough should be able to move into the new building by April or May of next year. Currently, the borough rents space in a building on North Street. Also pictured are borough secretary Louise McClafferty, council President John McGuire, Yaich, and Councilmen Jeremy Melber and Todd Mason.
